200 tonnes of cardboard went up in flames at Weir Waste Services’ Oldbury recycling site in the early hours this morning (28 April).
West Midlands Fire Service received over 40 emergency calls from residents reporting the fire.
It deployed more than 50 firefighters who worked through the nigh to tackle the blaze. Ten fire engines and two aerial platforms were also despatched to the scene.
Residents were warned to keep doors and windows closed because of fumes and flames could be seen from several miles away.
The incident was eventually scaled down at about 4am but fire crews stayed at the scene working with employees to clear the site.
An investigation into the cause of the fire was under way.
