Asda Donates Plastic Bag Levy Proceeds To Welsh Community Causes

Supermarket chain, Asda, will donate all of its funds, £360,000, raised from the Welsh 5p carrier bag charge to local causes, it announced yesterday.

With help from charity experts at Community Foundation in Wales, the supermarket is donating all of the £360,000 raised from the levy and has given community groups and charities until 30 September to apply for donations.

“By working with Community Foundation in Wales we have the opportunity to invest innovatively in our local communities, and we want this to support local projects and charities in every Asda mile”

Richard Mason, senior manager, community and corporate responsibility at Asda, said: “We want the carrier bag charge to have long-term social – as well as environmental – benefits.

“By working with Community Foundation in Wales we have the opportunity to invest innovatively in our local communities, and we want this to support local projects and charities in every Asda mile.”

The money will be distributed as 180 awards of £2,000 each, with a charity focus on children and young people, older people, health and/or community cohesion.

Community Foundation in Wales will coordinate and advise on the awards and regional selection panels of Asda colleagues will vote on which projects benefit.
