Consultation On Europe’s Waste And Recycling Targets Launched

05-06-13(2)picThe European Commission has launched a consultation on the future of Europe’s waste and recycling targets.

The consultation is in its first phase, to which public authorities, citizens, and third sector and private organisations can respond. It is set to run until September 10 2013.

The consultation will seek views on whether there is a need to change the targets in line with the Commission’s aspirations outlined in the Resource Efficiency Roadmap, published in 2011.

Stakeholders are being asked to comment on caps regarding the amount of waste that can be sent for incineration and the introduction of targets for new waste streams such as wood, food waste and textiles.

The Targets Review Project has been commissioned by DG Environment at the European Commission.

The project is aimed at identifying the issues and proposing possible solutions to the targets in the Waste Framework Directive, the Landfill Directive and the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive.

The basis for the review of the targets is twofold: on the one hand it is to respond to the review clauses set out in the Directives and, on the other, to bring these targets in line with the Commission’s ambitions of promoting resource efficiency as detailed in the Roadmap on Resource Efficiency, the aspirations for which have been included as part of the Commission’s proposal for a 7th Environmental Action Programme.
