A new city-wide collection and recycling programme for cigarette waste – the first of its kind in Switzerland – launched today at the start of the World Economic Forum thanks to a partnership between the City of Davos and TerraCycle.
People in Davos can now recycle their cigarette butts by extinguishing and placing them in easily accessible and well-marked cigarette ashtrays located at public locations along the main roads of Davos.
Smokers’ materials including cigarette butts are the most commonly occurring items of litter in the world. 1.69bn pounds of cigarette butts wind up as litter worldwide per year. That equals about 1 in 3 cigarettes ending up as litter. Cigarette butts are not biodegradable and do not break down quickly, making them a serious environmental hazard when not disposed correctly.
It is hoped this new cigarette waste recycling initiative in Davos will provide the motivation for people to help to clean up their community by diverting thousands of cigarette butts which currently end up in waste bins and incineration or in many cases unfortunately become litter on the streets.
“By placing clearly marked cigarette waste recycling ashtrays in convenient public locations across the city we are making it easier for people to do their part in keeping the City cigarette litter free and a nicer place to live and work.”
All the cigarette waste collected in the cigarette ashtrays will be sent into TerraCycle and then recycled into a variety of useful plastic products, such as delivery pallets, reducing the need to use virgin plastic. The organic parts of the waste – the paper and remaining tobacco – will be composted.
Stefan Walser, Statthalter (Governor) of Davos comments: “We are delighted to partner with TerraCycle to enable Davos to become the first City in Switzerland to recycle its cigarette waste. By placing clearly marked cigarette waste recycling ashtrays in convenient public locations across the city we are making it easier for people to do their part in keeping the City cigarette litter free and a nicer place to live and work.”
TerraCycle CEO and Founder, Tom Szaky comments: “We are thrilled that the City of Davos has become the first in Switzerland to implement a city-wide recycling initiative for cigarette waste. TerraCycle already runs highly successful city and country wide cigarette waste recycling programs in a number of countries around the world. We hope that world leaders at this week’s World Economic Forum will take note of this new cigarette recycling initiative and consider recommending similar solutions are implemented in other cities and countries around the world.”
