Research carried out by ZWS for WRAP revealed 2,900 tonnes of beef alone was discarded annually; 22,000 tonnes of beef, lamb, poultry and pork was thrown away each year, worth £140m; and £5m worth of food wasted because it is not used in time.

Ylva Haglund, food waste campaign manager for Zero Waste Scotland, told BBC News: “Our research has shown that despite our love of beef in Scotland, we still throw away millions of pounds worth every year, with an equivalent weight to 26 million burgers, or the weight of 13 million steaks.”

The study shows that small steps at home could help avoid food going to waste, such as planning meals in advance, storing food better, understanding date labels, serving the right portions and cooking with leftovers.

The Scottish government this month announced a new target to reduce food waste by 33% by 2025, which could save businesses and households across the country at least £500m.

During the launch of the Circular Economy Strategy, Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead said: “The Scottish Food Waste Reduction Target is the first of its kind in Europe. Pledging to cut food waste by 33% by 2025 will put Scotland at the forefront of global action to tackle food waste, and will put us on track to deliver the UN Sustainable Development Goal of halving food waste by 2030.

“Household food waste in Scotland has decreased by an estimated 37,000 tonnes per year – 5.7 per cent overall – since 2009, saving households across the country a staggering £92m a year. That’s a great start but I want to see more done, which is why I have set this target today.”
