Havering Rolls Out Recycling Rewards Scheme For Residents

14-02-14(3)picA new scheme that will reward residents for wasting less and recycling more in the first borough-wide rewards scheme of its kind in the Capital launched yesterday (13 Jan).

Over the next six weeks, every household in the borough will receive an activation pack for the new London Green Points – Havering scheme.

Neil “Dr” Fox, presenter of Magic 105.4’s Breakfast Show and Ambassador for London Green Points urged residents in Havering to get involved: “This is a great scheme as residents will be able to earn points for reducing, reusing and recycling their rubbish; these points can be donated to some fantastic community projects in Havering or spent on iTunes vouchers and loads of other great rewards. When people sign up, they also get a card for discounts from lots of local retailers, so this really is a win/win for everyone!”

Residents need to activate their accounts in order to start earning Green Points and to get their London Green Points – Havering card.

The more residents reduce, re-use and recycle waste, the more Green Points they will earn.

Green Points can be donated by residents to 11 local charity and community projects, including a Local Schools Fund, or spent on over 1,000 products, vouchers and experiences, all of which have been vetted by an independent Sustainability Advisory Panel.

All residents who activate their accounts will also be issued with a London Green Points – Havering card. This card will allow residents to access special offers and discounts in a wide range of local shops and businesses across the Borough as well as online discounts.

Mayara Harrison, local business partner and owner of Snazzy Gems Boutique, a children’s clothing, toys and accessories shop in Romford is enthusiastic about the potential for the scheme: “London Green Points – Havering is a great way to promote my business locally. It’s a fantastic opportunity for me and local customers. I’m really excited to be a part of it.”

Door-to-door teams will be out and about in Havering from the end of January, helping households activate their accounts. While online accounts are the preferred option, people without access to the internet can also set up offline accounts.

Councillor Barry Tebbutt, Havering Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said of the scheme: “This is a great new scheme that sets us apart as the only borough in London that’s rewarding residents for reducing, reusing and recycling their rubbish.

Havering Council was successful in winning a grant from the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) in support of its weekly waste collections and the cost of the reward scheme will be fully covered by the DCLG grant.

The new reward scheme will be introduced to all Havering’s 100,000 households from this week.
