Lord Deben Calls For Ban On Food Waste To Landfill

Former farm minister and environment secretary, Lord Deben (pictured), has called for a ban on food waste to landfill while speaking at Waste-Works today (23 March).

Speaking at the event dedicated to the food and drink industry, Lord Deben had short shrift for retailers still sending food waste to landfill and was critical of the wasteful practices of supermarkets such as selling food in large quantities and rejecting food based on appearance and size.

However, he did emphasise the importance of recognising the efforts of retailers tackling waste to encourage them to continue and achieve even more.

The Rt Hon. John Gummer, Chairman of the UK’s Committee on Climate Change and sustainability consultancy Sancroft International, chaired the event’s keynote session and took part in a discussion on changing attitudes to food waste and sustainable procurement.

Meanwhile, Marc Zornes, co-founder of technology company Winnow Solutions, announced that its smart meter, which measures and manages food waste has saved caterers, hotels, schools and restaurants over £1m in reduced annual costs.

The Winnow System, a smart meter that automatically measures what’s put in the bin, gives chefs the necessary insight to change their operations and significantly reduce food waste.

Following a successful partnership with the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA), as well as large caterers such as Compass Group using Winnow’s smart meter, the system has saved the equivalent of over 680,000 meals and 3,400 tonnes of CO2 to date.
