A 23-year old man was crushed to death at a waste recycling site in Northamptonshire, an inquest heard yesterday. Azeem Latif was working at Smart Waste Management in Tiffield when a forklift truck fell on him, causing fatal injuries in June 2012.
Giving evidence at the inquest at County Hall yesterday (6 August) a co-worker, Tahir Rehman, described how Latif and himself were tasked with clearing out the warehouse to make space for a delivery lorry.
After a failed attempt by Rehman at using a forklift to remove a metal ramp, Latif attempted to use the forklift to move it himself.
“The fork-lift tilted and [Latif] jumped out and was struck by the machine that pinned him to the ground,” said Rehman.
Latif was declared dead from serious head and neck injuries after emergency services arrived at the scene.
Latif moved to the UK from Pakistan in May 2011 and was a business studies student working part-time at the waste recycling site.
Latif had not been given permission by the company to use a fork-lift truck and had been given a verbal warning in the past by his site manager when he was caught sitting in one of the vehicles, the inquest heard.
A jury recorded a verdict of accidental death.
