Maskell New Shadow Defra Secretary As McCarthy Quits

Rachael-Maskell-MPMP for York Central, Rachael Maskell (pictured), has been appointed as Labour’s new shadow secretary of state for environment, food and rural affairs (Defra), following the resignation of Bristol East MP Kerry McCarthy.

McCarthy resigned in the wake of UK’s decision to leave the European Union, following more than 40 other Labour MPs who resigned from Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow cabinet over the last 48 hours.

McCarthy is mostly known within the resource community for her activism around food waste.

The new shadow Defra secretary of state, Maskell is a former Unite union national officer and was elected at last year’s general election. Until yesterday she was shadow defence minister.

It has today been revealed that up to 150 MPs are expected to vote against Jeremy Corbyn, according to reports in the Telegraph.
