The Ellen MacArthur Foundation have been awarded £500,000 from the UK’s People’s Postcode Lottery Dream Fund to help mobilise its plastics economy initiative.
The award was announced on Friday (29 January) evening at the People’s Postcode Lottery annual charity gala event in Edinburgh.
The initiative is being established to implement the recommendations of The New Plastics Economy: Rethinking the future of plastics report, by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the World Economic Forum and McKinsey & Company, which was released last week in Davos.
Dame Ellen MacArthur – “The New Plastics Economy report gives an extensive overview of today’s plastics economy and its challenges, but perhaps more importantly provides the vision for a new system in which plastics never become waste”
The report demonstrates the size of the plastics waste challenge we face, estimating that by 2050, without significant action, our oceans will contain more plastic than fish, by weight – a startling statistic.
Measures to address plastic waste so far have focused on collection after use, which at best will only slow down the unwanted consequences of plastics use like leakage into natural systems.
The report takes a new approach by looking at the system as a whole and redesigning the way it works – mapping out a clear path forward for tackling plastics issues at their root cause.
The New Plastics Economy initiative will now drive progress forward on this path, with a new approach aimed at turning plastics waste from a problem into an opportunity.
The activities initiated in the UK with our scientific research partner Plymouth Marine Laboratory, and with the support of the People’s Postcode Lottery Dream Fund will, the Foundation believes, lead the way for a larger global effort that will ultimately lead us towards a world where plastics never become waste.
Dame Ellen MacArthur said: “The New Plastics Economy report gives an extensive overview of today’s plastics economy and its challenges, but perhaps more importantly provides the vision for a new system in which plastics never become waste.
“We are delighted that, thanks to the Dream Fund, we are able to count on the support of players of People’s Postcode Lottery, which will enable us to bring together the capabilities we need to turn this vision into a reality.”
