According to the respondents of a CIWM Journal Online poll, incentive schemes to increase recycling might work “in certain circumstances”.
The poll comes after Serco published new research, showing that local authorities with incentive schemes recorded an average eight percent increase in recycling.
The report used the “nearest neighbour” concept to establish disposal and recycling trends, which benchmarked the performance of the authorities against that of 27 other authorities without reward schemes.
This is the first time that the performance of recycling incentives has been examined by industry professionals and experts.
CIWM Journal Online asked visitors to the site whether incentive schemes work to increase recycling?
62 percent of respondents were of the opinion that recycling incentives could work, answering “maybe, in certain circumstances”.
24 percent opted for an outright “yes”, incentive schemes do work to increase recycling.
14 percent of respondents were of the opinion that they did not.
