The driver of a Viridor skiploader was pronounced dead at Plymouth’s Derriford hospital yesterday (8 June) following an incident that saw the vehicle roll down a slope into a building.
According to the Plymouth Herald, Sergeant Rob Kelland, senior investigating officer, said: “There has been an incident here involving a skip lorry where the trailer, for reasons that we are investigating, has rolled away while the driver has been out of the vehicle.
“It would appear the driver has attempted to stop the lorry rolling away, has fallen, and unfortunately he appears to have been run over by his own lorry.
“We are investigating the cause as to why the lorry should have moved with him out of the cab.

“We know who he is, his family are at the hospital but we are not releasing his details at the moment.
“The truck has hit him and then gone down the hill and collided with the Hospital Radio building.
“He was taken into accident and emergency where it was declared that he was deceased. We think he was hitching his trailer up, but we are trying to investigate the full facts.
“Looking at the vehicle configuration it looks as though he has brought a trailer in to hitch it to the lorry.”
Devon and Cornwall Police said in a statement: “No other vehicles or people are believed to have been involved at this time. The Health and Safety Executive has been informed.”
Viridor confirmed the incident in a statement: “It is with regret that the company confirms that a Viridor collections services driver has died following an incident involving one of its vehicles at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth this morning.
