An estimated 3.5 million people in the UK throw hot cross buns away each year, new research from Too Good To Go shows.
1 in 12 hot cross buns are thrown away every year after Easter celebrations have ended, according to a survey of 2000 UK adults.
The average household buys around six hot cross buns in the lead-up to Easter and over half of Brits (54%) admit they end up with leftovers.
The food redistribution marketplace Too Good To Go found almost 40% of hot cross buns go stale before they’re eaten, while 18% are throw away because people simply bought too many, and 24% miss their best-before date.
Too Good To Go has also partnered with businesses, including Greggs, Costa Coffee, and GAIL’s, to redistribute seasonal items through its Surprise Bags initiative.
Chelsea Kerr, UK & Ireland Managing Director at Too Good To Go, commented: “Hot cross buns are an Easter favourite, but with more than half of Brits admitting they end up with leftovers, it’s clear we need to rethink how we enjoy these seasonal treats.”
