About

Established on 1 April 2023, Cumberland Council is a unitary authority formed from the merger of the Allerdale, Carlisle, and Copeland councils. A key priority for the new council is creating a unified and sustainable waste management service for its 275,000 residents, a major task involving the harmonisation of three legacy collection systems.

The council is standardising bin systems to make recycling easier and more efficient. Services include kerbside collections for recycling and general waste, Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs), and garden waste schemes. A core part of its strategy is diverting waste from landfill through a Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) plant, which recovers recyclables and creates fuel from residual waste. With a stated goal of achieving a 56% recycling rate, Cumberland Council is focused on reducing waste and building a more sustainable future for the region.
