Arson investigation launched after recycling centre fire in Wales

A recent fire at a recycling centre in Wales that caused nearby roads to close is being investigated as a ‘deliberate ignition’ by police.

On 29 April this year, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service were called to reports of flames and heavy smoke at AWD Group on Dock Road, Port Talbot.

The fire involved around 200 tonnes of commercial waste and forced nearby roads to close so emergency services could access the site. The Fire and Rescue Service advised local residents to keep their windows and doors closed because of the significant amount of smoke.

AWD Group Ltd have now confirmed the incident is being investigated by South Wales Police and Fire Investigators as ‘suspected deliberate ignition’.

This week, Alun Davies, Managing Director at AWD Group Ltd, confirmed that operations had now resumed at the facility in Port Talbot.

In a statement, Davies said: “Following an enormous amount of work over the past few days by our staff, contractors, and supporting partners, AWD has now safely recommenced operations at the site.”

“We would also like to acknowledge the support and engagement from NRW, Welsh Government, Local Authorities, and the wider industry throughout this period, all of whom recognised the importance of restoring services as quickly and safely as possible.”
