Ecosurety acquires City to Sea’s Refill Return programmes

City to Sea

Ecosurety has acquired refill and reuse assets from the environmental campaigning organisation City to Sea, which is closing its operations.

The acquired assets include City to Sea’s Refill Return app and website, which support towns, cities, universities, and visitor attractions to implement reusable packaging schemes.

City to Sea ceased operations in September after ten years of campaigning to reduce plastic pollution. In 2016, City to Sea launched the Refill app, which has been downloaded over 750,000 times and lists more than 370,000 Refill Stations worldwide.

City to Sea also launched city-wide reuse systems to demonstrate the scalability of reuse solutions, with the charity saying it achieved 97% return rates and saved over 25,000 single-use cups.

Ecosurety, a packaging EPR compliance scheme, says the assets will be integrated into its broader strategy to build reuse infrastructure nationwide.

Commenting on the acquisition, Robbie Staniforth, Innovation & Policy Director at Ecosurety, said: “We’ve worked closely with City to Sea for many years, united by our shared commitment to sustainability and innovation.”

“Their values have always aligned closely with ours, and when alerted to their potential closing, we worked together to secure a legacy for the brilliant assets they have created over the past decade. We’re determined to ensure their pioneering work in reuse and refill continues to make a lasting impact.”
