Grundon Unveils Major New Waste Facility For Banbury

Victoria Prentis MP cuts the ribbon alongside Neil Grundon to officially open Grundon Waste Management’s new £7 million Bulk Recycling Centre in Banbury.

Grundon Waste Management, the UK’s largest family owned waste management company, has opened a brand new 20,000 sq m waste facility to serve businesses in Banbury and also the surrounding areas of North Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire.

The £7 million investment by Grundon, which is located on the Thorpe Way Industrial Estate in the town, accepts commercial and industrial waste, in addition to domestic waste and recyclables from Cherwell District Council. This includes plastics, cardboard, paper, wood, glass and plasterboard.

The development took less than a year to complete, with Grundon working on the design and build with its contractor Clugston Construction Limited.

Grundon, which has its headquarters at Benson, Oxfordshire, works to reduce the financial and environmental impact of its customers’ waste.

The construction of the new waste facility, on previously undeveloped land owned by Banbury Town Council, is the first phase of a longer-term commitment by Grundon to the town.

“We have traditionally operated out of two sites but wanted to streamline our operations. When the site at Thorpe Road became available it made sense to us, and to the local council, to work towards integrating our offices, depot and waste transfer station onto the one site.”

Neil Grundon, Deputy Chairman at Grundon Waste Management, said: “Grundon has a long association with Banbury. We have traditionally operated out of two sites but wanted to streamline our operations. When the site at Thorpe Road became available it made sense to us, and to the local council, to work towards integrating our offices, depot and waste transfer station onto the one site.

“Having completed phase one of the project in opening this new waste facility, we plan to invest in preparing our old site at Merton Road for residential development alongside continuing our commitment to providing an efficient waste management service to our customers in and around Banbury.”

Victoria Prentis, MP for North Oxfordshire, officially opened the new facility at a ceremony on Monday, October 8. She said: “It is fantastic to see a family business like Grundon investing in Banbury and the local area. We all have a duty to deal with our waste, and Grundon has a strong reputation for effective waste management and helping the region’s businesses reduce the amount which goes to landfill alongside actively encouraging recycling.”

David Clugston at Clugston Construction Limited, said: “Investments of this nature are playing a vital part in contributing towards a cleaner, greener future and Clugston have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of working with Grundon in delivering this valuable local asset.”

Neil added: “The new site will provide increased job security for our 61 number of employees in Banbury.”
