Lidl GB sets target to reduce food waste by 70% by 2030

Lidl GB has increased its target to reduce food waste from its stores from 50% to 70% by 2030.

Announced to coincide with Food Waste Action Week, the new target comes after Lidl GB surpassed its goal to decrease food waste by 40% by 2025.

To drive this next phase of food waste reduction, Lidl is extending its current partnership with Neighbourly to trial the charity’s Surplus Saviours initiative in the Midlands.

Anyone registered with the redistribution scheme can collect unsold surplus from Lidl stores, including charity volunteers and customers. Lidl expects the trial to redistribute over 5,000 tonnes of food to those in need.

Lidl is also launching a new animal feed trial in the Peterborough region which will see the supermarket chain divert inedible fresh bakery lines to create animal feed.

Commenting on the announcement, Matt Juden-Bloomfield, Head of Sustainability at Lidl GB, said: “At Lidl, we set ambitious targets that challenge how we operate and inspire innovation when it comes to food waste.”

“We’ve made good strides, but we know we can do more. With that in mind, we have increased our targets to ensure we remain accountable and also introduced some exciting new trials to take things to the next level.”
