U.S. Plastics Pact releases guides to advance circular economy for plastics

U.S. Plastics Pact

The U.S. Plastics Pact has released new “Design for Circularity Playbooks”, which aim to act as guides for the lifecycle of plastics in the United States.

Launched in August 2020 as part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s global Plastics Pact network, the U.S. Plastics Pact is led by The Recycling Partnership, with support from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation said U.S. Plastics Pact members aim to ensure all plastic packaging will be 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.

The three guides are the Design for Recyclability, Design for Reuse and Design for Compostability Playbooks.

The playbooks aim to act best practice guidelines that promote designing for multiple uses, enhancing recyclability, and producing high-quality recycled content.

The U.S. Plastic Pact said the playbooks ensure “a unified and practical approach” to achieving sustainability goals in plastics management.

Commenting on the launch of the playbooks, Jonathan Quinn, CEO of U.S. Plastics Pact, said: “These reports represent a significant step forward in our shared journey toward sustainability.

“By providing clear, actionable guidelines, we empower companies and organisations to make informed decisions to drive substantial improvements in plastic design and management.

“We all need to take responsibility, and these guidelines help us do just that.”
