Waste crews in Bristol rescued a man from being crushed by the machinery inside a bin lorry yesterday morning.

Bristol Waste Company confirmed the serious incident involving a refuse collection vehicle and a member of the public occurred on Monday, 29 June.

During waste collection rounds, the crew became aware that a person who had been inside a waste container was trapped in the truck and immediately stopped the machinery.

Bristol Waste said the crew safely assisted the person from the vehicle and contacted emergency services.

The individual did not appear to have sustained any obvious injuries at the scene, the company said, and declined medical assessment from the ambulance service.

Bristol Waste said it has launched a full investigation into the incident.

Director of Operations for Bristol Waste, Ricky Gayfer, commented: “Health and safety is of utmost importance to Bristol Waste and all our people.”

“The crews followed their training and procedures and acted quickly – it is thanks to them that this did not end in tragedy. It is imperative that people do not seek shelter in bins, and we will be reaching out to relevant organisations in the city to help get this message out.”
