Biffa has announced it is creating more than 250 household waste collection jobs in preparation for the rollout of Simpler Recycling rules in England.
The new positions include waste truck drivers and loaders, supervisors and fleet technicians for 12 of Biffa’s 30 local authority contracts.
The waste management company says many of the roles are directly related to the launch of Simpler Recycling in April 2026.
Biffa already employs more than 11,000 people across its collections, recycling, energy generation and disposal businesses across the UK.
The new roles comprise:
- Drivers – Working as part of a crew, drive an LGV refuse collection vehicle for the collection of waste and recycling from residential streets
- Loaders – Working as part of a crew, collect bins, boxes and bags from people’s homes and empty them into the refuse collection vehicle.
- Supervisors – Supervising operational activities at the depot, including maintaining records and supporting and managing the workforce.
- Fleet technicians – Maintaining and repairing vans and associated refuse collection vehicles to meet health and safety legislation and DVSA requirements.
Steve Cole, Managing Director, Biffa Municipal, said: “Simpler Recycling may be eight months away, but it’s vital we start recruiting now to make sure we have the best people in place for the successful preparation and delivery of this important change to the way people in England recycle at home.”
Cole said that Simpler Recycling will make recycling ‘easier and more consistent’ by ensuring every household can recycle the same materials wherever they are in England.
As part of Simpler Recycling, from April 2026, all households in England will have a maximum of four bins, bags or boxes for:
- Food waste (mixed with garden waste where applicable)
- Paper and card
- Plastic, metal and glass
- Non-recyclable waste
