The Circular Economy Institute (CEI) has appointed Iain Gulland, the former CEO of Zero Waste Scotland, as Chair of its Strategic Advisory Forum.

As part of its evolved governance structure by parent organisation CIWM Group, the CEI has appointed Iain Gulland as Chair of its newly established Strategic Advisory Forum.

The CEI is a global network of circular economy professionals that provides training, accreditation and knowledge sharing within the circular economy community.

The Strategic Advisory Forum serves as an independent advisory body for the CEI, bringing together industry experts, technical specialists, and sector leaders.

Reporting to the CIWM Group Trustee Board and the CEI Board of Directors, the Forum provides ‘high-level market intelligence’ to align CEI’s training, accreditation, and business recognition programmes with professional standards and market demand, translate policy into practical, easily understood guidance, and expand the institute’s international reach.

Gulland has a ‘proven track record’ of guiding national and global transitions toward net zero, advancing sustainable resource management, and shaping sector policy.

Gulland, a globally recognised leader in the circular economy and a former Chief Executive of Zero Waste Scotland, will lead the Forum in delivering strategic oversight and guidance.

The CEI says Gulland has a ‘proven track record’ of guiding national and global transitions toward net zero, advancing sustainable resource management, and shaping sector policy.

Commenting on his appointment, Iain Gulland, Chair of the Strategic Advisory Forum for the Circular Economy Institute, said: “The circular economy needs to be more than just a theoretical concept – it requires a global network of accredited circular professionals across all business sectors and governments to inspire and broker the transition.”

“I look forward to working with the Advisory Forum to provide the insights to ensure that the Circular Economy Institute continues to provide the world-class training needed to underpin the shift to a more circular and sustainable future.”

The Forum will also support the CEI’s ambassadorial initiatives, helping ensure the CEI actively shapes policy and shares knowledge and expertise at national and international events.

Katie Cockburn, Senior Director for Policy and Education at the Circular Economy Institute, said the appointment was ‘an important milestone’ in the evolution of the CEI.

“As we move from building our foundations to scaling global delivery, robust and enabling governance is essential,” Cockburn said.

“The appointment of Iain Gulland as Chair of the Strategic Advisory Forum brings exceptional sector leadership and independent insight to our work, ensuring we remain positioned to support professionals and organisations in driving meaningful, long-term impact.”
