Ecosurety becomes first UK compliance scheme to secure B Corp certification

Bristol based firm joins global network of 3,200 companies with B Corp certification, reinforcing its long-standing commitment to deliver change for good.

Ecosurety has announced today its certification as a registered B Corporation (B Corp), becoming the first compliance scheme to successfully receive the social and environmental business standard in the UK.

With 290 B Corp businesses currently registered in the UK and over 3,200 across the globe, Ecosurety joins a growing network of companies reinventing business, by pursuing purpose as well as profit.

B Corps are for-profit companies that use the power of business to build a more inclusive and sustainable economy.

This is a movement of companies who are committed to changing how business operates, who believe business really can be a force for good

Businesses seeking the certification are externally assessed by B Lab to ensure they meet rigorous social and environmental standards which represent their commitment to goals outside of shareholder profit.

The B Corp certification covers five key impact areas of Governance, Workers, Community, Environment and Customers, and successful companies have reached a benchmark score of over 80 and provide evidence of socially and environmentally responsible practices.

By becoming a B Corp, Ecosurety is committing to deliver greater levels of transparency, accountability and ambition across these areas.

Delivering change for good

James Piper, Chief Executive Officer at Ecosurety says: “Ecosurety has a long-standing commitment to delivering change for good; not only for our members and the recycling sector upon which we rely, but our staff, our communities and our shared environment.

“Receiving this B Corp certification has provided Ecosurety with welcome recognition that the change we strive to deliver outside of the recycling compliance sector is having a positive social and environmental impact.

“We are delighted to be joining the growing community of B Corps across the UK that hold a similar set of values to our own and hope to use the B Corp certification as a valuable meter of progress as we continue to evolve as a business that places equal value on people, planet and profit.”

Kate Sandle, Director of Programmes and Engagement of B Lab UK, says “We are delighted to welcome Ecosurety to the B Corp community. This is a movement of companies who are committed to changing how business operates, who believe business really can be a force for good.

Welcoming Ecosurety is a particularly exciting moment because we’ve seen that the resources and waste industry is in particular need of a shake-up

“Welcoming Ecosurety is a particularly exciting moment because we’ve seen that the resources and waste industry is in particular need of a shake-up.

“We and the rest of the B Corp community are really pleased to support Ecosurety in paving the way for a new way of doing things.”

Over the last five years Ecosurety has been working to drive reform to the UK’s Extended Producer Responsibility system through increased transparency and recycling capacity.

Alongside this the company has worked to drive forward innovation, collaboration, education and investment across the UK recycling sector.

In November 2019 Ecosurety launched its first ever Exploration Fund, ring-fencing £1million over the next three years for innovation and research projects tackling the negative effects of packaging, batteries or electronic waste on the environment.
