New recycling and waste contract for southern Buckinghamshire

Buckinghamshire Council has announced that Veolia will begin a ten-year contract to deliver household waste collections and street cleansing services in the Chiltern, Wycombe and South Bucks areas of the Buckinghamshire from Monday 7 September.

The contract will be introduced on a phased basis with the first stage commencing in September 2020 in the Chiltern and Wycombe areas and the second in November 2021 in the South Bucks area.

The contract is expected to bring significant benefits with new operational, technological and community-based initiatives – including access to funding for local projects – that will help make services cleaner, greener and more efficient.

In December, Veolia will introduce its ‘village’ approach to street cleansing, with teams directly responsible for improving the service in their area to create local community spaces.

In Spring 2021 a fleet of new collection vehicles will be introduced that will reduce emissions, use electric bin lifts and contain state of the art in-cab technology that connects with the Council’s systems to allow residents to report problems and receive updates in real time. Residents will continue to use the same bins and will still be able to recycle the same comprehensive range of materials.

The contract brings together excellent services for residents with innovative new approaches which will help to make our waste and recycling services even more environmentally friendly

Bill Chapple OBE, Buckinghamshire Council Cabinet Member for Environment & Climate Change, said: “We’re pleased to be working with Veolia through the award of this major new contract for bin collections and street cleansing across the south of the county.

“The contract brings together excellent services for residents with innovative new approaches which will help to make our waste and recycling services even more environmentally friendly.”

Gavin Graveson, Executive Vice-President, Veolia UK and Ireland, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this major recycling and waste contract working with Buckinghamshire Council.

“This decision reflects our ability to manage complex public realm contracts and we look forward to working with local residents to deliver a first-class service that will contribute to a more sustainable future for everyone.”

There will be some changes to household collection days in the Chiltern and Wycombe areas from Spring 2021 to make the service more efficient. Any changes to collection days will be communicated in advance with affected householders.
