Remondis JBT Win South Shields Recycling Village Contract

The operation and management of the Recycling Village in Middlefields, South Shields, was put out to tender by South Tyneside Council earlier this year with Remondis JBT Ltd being awarded the contract.

Councillor Moira Smith, Lead Member for Area Management and Community Safety at South Tyneside Council, said: “With South Tyneside residents being encouraged to recycle more of their waste and the budget pressures facing the Council, it is extremely important that we achieve value for money for our taxpayers and get the best possible deal for the processing of materials.

“We look forward to working with REMONDIS JBT Ltd over the next few years. They have an excellent recycling record and are committed to working with us to improve the service while helping us to meet our recycling targets and divert even more waste away from landfill.”

The German waste management company REMONDIS was founded in 1934 and is part of a privately-owned multinational group of recycling, water, bio industries and logistics companies, turning over about 12 billion Euros and employing 60,000 staff.  Teaming up with a strong regional player, REMONDIS acquired Bedlington-based recycling operator JBT Waste Services Ltd in November last year.

Graham Palmer, MD at REMONDIS JBT Ltd, commented: “REMONDIS are highly experienced in providing municipal services across many countries. We are very pleased to be given the opportunity to provide these services to the people of South Tyneside.”

REMONDIS JBT’s job will be to manage the site, provide the staff to guide and assist the public with recycling and to provide the logistic support to move the sorted materials to the appropriate outlet for recycling or recovery. Mr Palmer added: “The site is a state of the art facility that won a design award in 2007. It recycles a high percentage of inputs. We are determined to drive this further along while providing excellent customer service.”

The new contract will run from 1 December 2017 until March 2020 and all staff will be transferred to the new contractor.
