SUEZ recycling and recovery UK has been awarded a contract by Devon County Council to develop a new waste transfer station, and process around 41,500tpa residual waste collected from households in North Devon and Torridge districts and around 3,500tpa residual waste from six of the county’s household waste recycling centres.
Valued at over £60m, the ten-year waste treatment contract is due to be signed in early 2018 and includes an option to extend for five years. It will see SUEZ build the new waste transfer station on a Devon County Council owned site at Brynsworthy during 2018. From 11 February 2019 when the transfer station comes into service, the residual waste will be processed at the Severnside Energy Recovery Centre near Bristol.
“From 2019, not only will we be able to help the residents of Devon recycle and reuse as much as possible at their household waste recycling centres, we’ll also be able to divert residual waste from North Devon and Torridge from landfill through the Severnside Energy Recovery Centre, where it will be used as a sustainable fuel to generate energy for the national grid.”
The contract offers synergies with the service SUEZ already provides Devon under a contract to operate18 of the county’s household waste recycling centres and two waste transfer stations, allowing the new transfer station at Brynsworthy to be integrated into the existing management structure.

Devon County Councillor Andrea Davis, Cabinet member for Infrastructure Development & Waste said: “We are pleased to be working with SUEZ to deliver a new waste transfer station in the North Devon and Torridge area which will enable waste that is currently landfilled to be bulked up and processed to produce energy.
“This will mean that from February 2019 all but a small fraction of Devon’s household waste that cannot be re-used, recycled or composted will have been diverted away from landfill and used to generate energy.”
