Arun District Council Adds Three Years To Biffa Contract

Arun District Council has awarded Biffa’s municipal division a three-year extension to its current three year contract, continuing a contractual relationship that started in 2003.

In 2016, Biffa successfully bid for an initial three year contract which started in February 2017 and runs until early 2020. The extension will take the contract through to 2023, and should achieve six figure annual cost savings over that time.

Biffa’s 133 staff and their 48 vehicles will continue to provide weekly household refuse collections, fortnightly household recycling collections, streets and beach cleansing services, and the popular fortnightly garden waste collection service.

During 2017, the contractor introduced kerbside collections of household WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment), enhanced street cleansing services for regenerated areas, and an extended summer service to keep Arun’s popular beach foreshores even cleaner.

“Since being awarded the initial contract in November last year, Biffa has worked hard to keep refuse collections on time and our streets clean As a result, the council has extended its contract by a further three years.”

Cost savings delivered through the contract will allow the council to dedicate more resources to promoting recycling and tackling fly-tipping. The contract also enables the retention of the council’s current project officer role, which focuses on educating residents about recycling.

Councillor Paul Wotherspoon, Arun’s cabinet member for neighbourhood services, said: “Biffa is a trusted contractor which has provided the council with a consistent service for many years. Since being awarded the initial contract in November last year, Biffa has worked hard to keep refuse collections on time and our streets clean As a result, the council has extended its contract by a further three years.

“The initial contract period also achieved significant financial annual savings for the council, which have benefitted our finances during a tough economic climate.”

Pete Dickson, commercial director of Biffa’s municipal division, added: “As you’d imagine, we’re very pleased by Arun’s decision to extend our contract. Our long-term relationship owes much to the hard work and professionalism of Biffa’s local team and a mutually-supportive partnership between council and contractor.

“Biffa’s focus will remain firmly fixed on providing quality, efficient and cost-effective services for Arun’s residents.”
