South Gloucestershire Council is introducing new recycling bags for residents ahead of its transition to three-weekly black bin collections.
The council will provide all households in South Gloucestershire with a white reusable recycling bag for plastic, cans and foil, and a pack of blue bags for soft plastics.
The reusable bags can fully seal and are made of a durable material to help prevent litter, and are weighted to be less likely to blow away with the wind.
South Gloucestershire Council says the aim of separating these materials to be collected alongside weekly recycling is to ensure most people can accommodate three-weekly black bin collections.
According to the council, soft plastics currently account for around 29% of the waste collected in its black bins.
Initially, residents that were part of the soft plastic trial will receive the reusable recycling bags with the aim of all households be able to use the service by May.
Councillor Sean Rhodes, cabinet member responsible for recycling and waste at South Gloucestershire Council, commented: “Following the success of our soft plastics trial, we are delighted to be rolling out this service to all households, and we’ve chosen durable and litter resistant materials for the new bags to help keep our communities clean and tidy.”
“We hope these changes will help increase recycling rates in the area and make the system simpler to use for everyone.”
