Plan B | Milestones and ambitions: Our story

With six years at the helm of Plan B Management Solutions, Maz Akhtar, Managing Director, and Craig Cutajar, Material Sales Director, look at key moments for the business and discuss future plans.
Back in 2019, Maz and Craig were both working for Kier, aware that the company was in the process of exiting the market, and looking for their next challenge. Meanwhile, Plan B Management Solutions had been set up in 2006 and the owner was now looking to sell.
“We liked the fact that the platform already existed,” says Maz, “It meant we could hit the ground running from day one. The business then had one employee and a couple of contractors,” he adds.
“With our experiences and background, and coupled with the business as it was, we felt there was a great opportunity to transform and diversify the business with other complimentary services. Maz and I have different strengths and weaknesses that support each other, and it was clear that we shared a strong vision for what we wanted to achieve, and more importantly, how we would want to do business in terms of culture and values,” says Craig.
Fast forward to 2025 and the rate of growth is impressive. Today, there are 151 employees working across three areas: Managed Services, Consultancy and Materials Marketing & Sales. And the business isn’t slowing down.

“In 2019, we agreed a five-year plan, which included a turnover target of £20m, which we met by 2024. We’re now working towards our Vision 2030 plan, which includes growing the municipal side of our business,” Maz says.
Plan B Management Solutions started as a consultancy but, since Maz and Craig took over, the business has expanded into new areas and met some major milestones. These include becoming the waste services provider for Bridgend Council in Wales and investing in their own processing plant in Cardiff.
Due to become operational by the end of the summer 2025, it is permitted to handle up to 75,000 tonnes of material annually. The business is also proud to have donated 70,000 items in the last 12 months to food banks local to the communities where it operates.
“We truly live our values with actions, and we have a strong and loyal team who are always willing to jump in and do whatever’s needed. There’s no room for egos,” Maz adds.

WasteRecruit |The Great Compliance Myth – How green skills help companies navigate compliance complexities
Most people think that managing compliance is simple. Read the rules, tick the boxes, done. This might be the case if the rules weren’t constantly updating, or if the requirements didn’t vary by sector, area or materials, but often they do.
As an example, CIWM resources listed 16 compliance guidance updates in the space of four days. Regulations pertaining to WEEE, guidance on the UK Emissions Trading Scheme, producer responsibilities for EEE, classifying construction waste and more. Consider the number of updates that take place over the span of a year.
Compliance is anything but simple, and thinking it can be handed off to any junior in the company is somewhat risky. Reading rules might not take much skill, but understanding complexities, and knowing how to find the relevant information, certainly does. Keeping on top of compliance requirements takes effort, insight and skills.
As compliance evolves, so do green skills
With compliance, companies have the obligation to prove that they’ve followed certain procedures. This means that the people involved in reporting have to know more than just the regulations. They have to understand how waste management works, what the processes are, where things can go wrong, and what the ramifications are if they do.
Essentially this translates into having a commercial understanding of operations – which changes are commercially viable and which may need adjustment or be implemented over time.
However, commercial understanding is just the start, it’s the foundation on which the most valuable green skills are built. Skills such as creativity, communication, influence, relationship building and management. These are the green skills vital for working in compliance. The examples below illustrate why:
Creativity as a green skill:
A new regulation may dictate that certain procedures and practices are implemented in order for a company to remain compliant. This advice may be defined by an ideal best practice. However, the best solutions may not be financially realistic because the company is not operating in the ideal business case scenario. This reality is matched by another: non-compliance isn’t an option either.
Applying creativity isn’t about finding ways to circumvent the regulations. Rather it’s about how to be pragmatic and creative in order to find solutions that achieve the required outcomes. When hiring for compliance roles, assessing how a candidate uses their creativity to develop solutions is an important part of the process.
Managing expectations as a valuable compliance skill
Keeping regulators happy is a major objective for those working in compliance. It’s also one of the biggest challenges. It’s not unusual to find that regulator expectations are entirely misaligned with the commercial realities of operating a successful business.
Getting regulators to agree to any form of compromise takes strong communication skills, best built on the foundation of a strong working relationship. Regulators are more likely to be open to hearing alternate solutions when they know and trust that the compliance person isn’t trying to circumnavigate regulations, they’re simply trying to find a workable solution.
Soft skills that impact how successfully change is made
Even workable solutions often require major changes in ways of working. Change that operations staff and management resist more often than not. Engagement, relationship building and communication are all soft skills that help to gain buy-in to new processes. This includes the ability to listen and understand other people’s perspectives and concerns as these are often what trip up change initiatives, when ignored.
It’s possible to challenge behaviour and initiate new ways of working if there’s trust that’s been built through good relationships. When people understand why something is being done and feel empowered by the role they have to play in the process, change becomes easier. Soft skills have a vital role to play in achieving this.
Identifying green skills vital for compliance roles
These examples highlight that compliance requires skills that go far beyond the ability to read a rulebook. The challenge is that many of these skills won’t be highlighted on a CV, they may not even come up in interviews, unless there’s a specific line of questioning.
Skills-based testing is proven to be one of the most effective ways to determine if candidates will be a good fit for a role. By placing them in specific work situation scenarios, it’s possible to see how they are thinking as they deal with challenges. It tests soft skills as well as application of knowledge which is what’s needed in real work situations. It answers the questions: Can they do the job and how well will they perform.
As more new regulations and compliance schemes come into effect, compliance will be closely watched. Companies cannot afford damage to their brands for non-compliance, so having people with the right skills in compliance roles is vital. The definition of green skills is ever expanding and compliance is set to be a major role player in highlighting what skills are needed.

Dennis Eagle | Cambridgeshire improves fleet manoeuvrability with new Dennis Eagle rear-steer vehicles
Dennis Eagle was recently selected by Greater Cambridge Shared Waste Service (GCSWS) to provide a new fleet of 11 rear-steer refuse collection vehicles (RCVs) that will help improve manoeuvrability during collection rounds for 135,000 properties across the region.
GCSWS has bolstered its 54-strong fleet with an 18-tonne Elite+ Narrow 4×2, eight 26–tonne Elite+ Narrow 6×2 rear-steer RCVs, and a 32-tonne Elite+ 8×4 rear-steer, all fitted with Terberg OmniDEKA bin lifts, as well as two Elite+ 6×4 rear-steer trade vehicles with Terberg OmniTRADE bin lifts. The new rear-steer vehicles offer greater agility and additional manoeuvrability, enabling drivers to navigate the city of Cambridge’s narrow and tight streets with ease.
“In 2022 we trialled two Elite+ 8×4 rear-steer RCVs and they were an absolute game-changer for us,” said Robin Moore, Assistant Operations Manager (Fleet and Asset), GCSWS. “Our drivers have been thrilled with the improved manoeuvrability, so we specified rear-steer across all new vehicles. You can put an 8×4 in the same place you can a 6×2; they’re a brilliant piece of kit. This agility means we can now send any vehicle to any area.”
The new Elite+ cab also offers additional refinements such as a heating and ventilation system, radio speakers, and an increased number of cupholders, improving comfort and the user experience for crews. As per its existing fleet, the vehicles will be supported by Dennis Eagle’s Witham Service Centre. “Dave Cornwell and the team at the Witham Service Centre have always been brilliant, providing us with great support. They move mountains to get us back on the road in a sensible time,” said Moore.
Formally South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) and Cambridge City Council (CCC), the two merged to form GCSWS in 2017. Since then, the team has been continuously innovating to improve services. One of the first areas to add an eCollect electric RCV (eRCV) to its fleet, two out of the current fleet of four electric vehicles now come from Dennis Eagle. GCSWS will break ground on a planned solar farm later this year that will provide solar energy to its eRCV fleet, which will soon grow to 18.
“We’ve always had a strong working relationship with GCSWS,” said Nicola Case, Regional Sales Manager, Dennis Eagle. “We strive to ensure our team remains highly supportive of their needs and helps to develop innovative ideas where advantageous. Over the next 12 months, there’s a lot of exciting activity going on for GCSWS, and we look forward to continuing this longstanding relationship with them.”
Greyparrot | Greyparrot to reveal real-world AI results and compliance automation at RWM 2025
Waste intelligence leader Greyparrot has announced their agenda for RWM 2025, focusing on the practical results that AI waste analytics is achieving at facilities across the UK and Europe.
To do it, their team will present alongside some of the facility operators that use waste intelligence technology on a daily basis.
The company has also previewed its pioneering work to automate Environment Agency (EA) compliance reporting. At RWM, Greyparrot plans to share details from an automated compliance project with one of the UK’s largest waste management organisations.
Innovation in action at UK and EU facilities
Since last year’s conference, Greyparrot has expanded its AI recognition library, introduced new features to its Analyzer system, launched a platform for brands and developed its own NIR hardware.
The company says that those features and products are now in action across more than 60 global facilities, and that it will showcase the impact on facility profitability at RWM.
One of the organisations that Greyparrot will highlight is KSI Recycling, one of the Netherlands’ largest plastics recovery facilities.
KSI’s Foppe-Jan de Meer will join a panel on the first day of the conference to explain how a simple cleaning test powered by Greyparrot Analyzer led to a 10% increase in recovered material — and kept the plant compliant with Dutch residue regulations. Ahead of the conference, Greyparrot has released a video breakdown of the testing process (and results).
Cheshire West Recycling’s Jody Sherratt will also join the panel, which Greyparrot says will “cut through the AI hype and explore what really changes when facilities adopt waste intelligence.” Last year, Sherratt’s facility deployed the Analyzer system in less than a week, quickly identifying underutilisation on a key product line and a business case for in-house haulage.
Greyparrot’s Matthew Steventon will host de Meer and Sherratt in What AI Saw That We Didn’t: An Operator’s Perspective on Waste Intelligence at 11:45am on September 17th, at RWM’s Commercial & Industrial Theatre.
Automating Environment Agency sampling
Breakthroughs in automated compliance sampling will also be on the agenda at RWM.
The EA’s sampling requirements currently demand a costly investment of time and human resources, but Greyparrot says it is accelerating a framework for AI-powered reporting that will meet EA requirements.
The company recently revealed that it has been working with a major UK recycler to test compliance sampling automation over the last year. Together, they have developed the first known framework for AI-automated sampling and reporting, which has been submitted to the EA for review.
Greyparrot says that their sampling framework will lead to faster reporting, fewer errors and lower sampling costs. Its team will share their plans to scale automated compliance to other UK facilities at RWM.
Hands-on with AI at RWM 2025
Along with their compliance plans, Greyparrot will also be showcasing the new Analyzer features that operators like de Meer and Sherratt are using to boost facility profits. The company will share live demos of its new recognition classes for opaque and coloured plastics, and walkthroughs of its customisable metrics, reporting and alerting features. Visitors can get hands-on with the system at Stand RS-D182.
Learn more about Greyparrot’s plans for RWM 2025 in their event announcement blog.
